The Possum Chronicles: Dirty Deeds…

Friends of ours have a son named Jake. Jake is awesome. We were playing a game at one of Willow’s birthday parties where the kids were dancing in a circle and choosing different animals for everyone to be. “A kitty!” one girl sez, and everyone dances like a kitty. (How much dance would a kitty dance if a kitty could dance… dances. Or something.)

When it’s Jake’s turn, he sticks out three fingers on each hand and starts moving reeeeeeeally slooooooow.

“Jake, what are you?”

“A sloth!”

See? Awesome.

So this morning we’re rockin’ out to a mix Jake made for Willow’s birthday a couple of years ago. It is called “Happy Birthday Willow (2008)” which is as good a title as any.

Something else that you need to know about Jake is that his parents (also awesome) have given him a fine education in classic and 80s rock. The main entertainment at their house is a laptop and two really good speakers, and if you want to know any little thing about hair bands, that’s the place to go.

My friend Dorothy was the librarian at Jake’s school; when we discovered the connection she said, with no prompting, “Oh, I know Jake! He knows a surprising amount about classic rock!”

Needless to say, “Happy Birthday Willow (2008)” is what? Awesome. In the language of my people, wicked awesome.

And, dude! let me create the playlist (with some omissions because didn’t have the songs and I’m too lazy to upload them right now)and, theoretically, embed it here. Let’s give it a try, shall we?

Get a playlist! Standalone player Get Ringtones

OK, well, that’s not exactly embedding, but we’ll live — click on “Pop-out Player” to rock out to Jake’s mix. And just in case you are too lazy to do that, here’s the playlist:

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap — ACDC
Dream On — Aerosmith
School’s Out for Summer — Alice Cooper
House of the Rising Sun — The Animals
Movin’ On — Bad Company
No Matter What — Badfinger (Not on Jerks.)
(Don’t Fear) The Reaper — Blue Oyster Cult
Hollywood Nights — Bob Seeger (Not on Jerks)
Peace Of Mind — Boston
Born To Run — Springsteen
Moving in Stereo — The Cars
Bad Moon Rising — CCR
Judy Blue Eyes — CSN
Hush — Deep Purple
Photograph — Def Leppard
Break On Through — The Doors
Peaceful Easy Feeling — Eagles

OK… kid was ten years old. Badfinger? And knowing enough to put something like Bad Moon Rising after Moving in Stereo? Putting Def Leppard in between Deep Purple and the Doors (ostensibly to point out that, no matter how Def Leppard-y Def Leppard may be, Photograph is a rockin’ tune)?

That’s just good parenting, that’s what that is.

OK, so why does this little tale of mine fall under The Possum Chronicles? because Possum loves this mix. And also because this morning, while she was helping Kai Lan get the ants across the river on, Possum was singing along. And not a lot of people know this, but ACDC was actually singing an ode to a small village in Scotland:

“Dirty deeds… Dunderchee! Dirty deeds… Dunderchee!”

I wonder — could that be where Big ol’ Jed and Lionel live?

One Response to “The Possum Chronicles: Dirty Deeds…”

  1. That’s the greatest playlist in the history of playlists. That Jake sounds like he is too cool for school.
