NaNoWriMo…Fo…
November is National Novel Writing Month.
So what the hell are you doing reading this? Get out there and write your novel!
More to the point, what the hell am I doing writing this?
Well… I’m procrastinating, as usual, and I’m ok with that. I am not going to “win” National Novel Writing Month, or NaNoWriMo, as the folks at NaNoWriMo.org would have it. You “win” by writing a 50,000 word novel. Or 10,000 five-word novels. Or one word 50,000 times — better pick something you like!
I am not going to be writing anything like any of those, but here is the very best thing about NaNoWriMo, and it’s a secret, so don’t tell them I told you: When you tell your family that you are writing a novel for NaNoWriMo, they will be suitably impressed… and give you plenty of time to write! They no longer look at you sideways when you are on the computer: no, you’re not playing Crush the Cathedral or watching old Journey videos on YouTube… you’re creating! You’re an artist!
And will they ask to see this masterpiece at the end? Ah, but there’s the most beautiful thing of all. Your epic, your great american novel, it is too huge, too complex, to all-encompassing to be written in one month. You are grateful to NaNoWriMo for the discipline to start — now, you are obsessed! Enthralled! You MUST finish! More writing time!!
I’m not sure how long this can be strung out. I’ll let you know. In the meantime, I am not actually working on the mystery — it’s a whole different project, called The Edge of the World. I could tell you what it is about but then I’d still have to write it anyway, so I might as well just do that. I’ll post bits as they take form.
